About Me

My photo
Hi, my name is Cord and I am 22 years old. I created this blog for a class I am taking right now called Introduction to Social Media. I am going to be blogging about interesting things I read about in technology news. This could include new gadgets, computers, discoveries, history, what ever really catches my attention that day.

Toilet Challenge - New Toilet Technology

Technology is a widely used term and Microsoft founder, Bill Gates, will follow it just about anywhere. Recently through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a competition has arose for a new technology for toilets to be discovered. Found scavenging [USA Today] and several other sites, there have been 3 very strong competitors for this new wave of toilet technology:

  1. Toilet that produces biological charcoal, minerals, and clean water
  2. Turning the toilet into an electricity generator for local use
  3. A urine-diverting toilet that recovers clean water on site.

This competition is used to help found a greener way of disposing of human waste. This will help the billions of people who use toilets every day. I am down for an upgrade on our current toilet technology; it is about time anyways don't you think? What would your perfect john consist of, green or not?

Kinect? Nope it's my microphone!

How cool would it be to hands free control your computer? What first comes to mind is the Microsoft Kinect. The Kinect runs for about $150 dollars currently, and no hands free computer is worth that much extra. Fortunately for us, Microsoft researchers have discovered a clever use for the average, built-in microphones on almost everyone's laptop. Using the speakers to emit a 20kHz tone (a tone almost nobody can even hear), they have developed a program that recognizes the change in frequency from the tone. This change in frequency is caused by your hands motions which cause the emitting tone to bounce off them however they move. The frequency generated is then recognized by the average microphone installed on any laptop or monitor.

This kind of technology is one of those subtle ideas that could become an everyday thing in everyone's life. Think about all the things they can do with this considering the hardware they use are available in any device with speakers and a microphone; tablets, desktops, smart phones, and laptops. Given this idea is still in its infancy for the way it is being used, there is still a lot more to come from this. The researchers (Sidhant Gupta, Dan Morris, Shwetak Patel, and Desney Tan) believe this technology could end up in cars and even your kitchen. Some of the cool things they have already been working on is scrolling, adjusting volume, waking a machine upon users distance from the screen (and also putting it back to sleep!), and pausing/playing videos and music. Another cool thing about this is they way they intend to implement it. According to an article done by Popular Mechanics, they do not intend to have this become a main focus, nor do they want to change the world of motion control through sound waves. They would rather it assist already current technology, such as the Kinect, and have it be available as support. It's nice that they discover such a unique use for speakers and mic's and they don't even want to exploit it for what it is worth; not yet at least.

Using the program they develop out of this could make using a Windows operating system that much more interesting and could help them in the fight against Mac operating systems.  Knowing Microsoft they would first only release the program through Windows OS first and then once they establish a firm foot in the door, they will release the program to the world. It would be a cool feature for any device once they have time to develop for different devices. I for one would purchase the app for my Droid, and can't wait till the day I can.

Google Fiber: Wish you would show up faster than your internet speeds

So Google has finally decided to enter into the ISP (Internet Service Provider) game with their new product, Google Fiber. It will provide streaming faster than any internet speeds available today. Streaming videos with no buffering, now that's already got me sold. Not to mention the integration between your TV, Smart Phone, and Computer all connected with your one Google account. According to PCWorld's Pro's and Con's about Google Fiber (PC World - Google Fiber Pros and Cons), one of the Pro's shows that it will actually wake up current ISP providers and cause them to lower prices and raise up connection speeds.

With their recent upgrades to the Google+ feature, Hangouts (PC Magazine - Google+ Hangouts Revamped), it will really make the living room TV more social with the option of 9 friends video chat! Again I can't stress this enough, but the speeds will allow for flawless syncing and streaming for video chat (given everyone was up to speed with Google Fiber). This could really push forward the professional and private use of video chatting. The benefits allow people from all over the world to connect at the press of a button. Given this technology is not new, Google Fiber blasts it into hyper speed with no annoying buffering. Personally, I am not on Skype or Facebook video chat because it lags left and right and sometimes just doesn't want to work. If it were as smooth as can be, I would be all for it.

Think about how much further the world would get with faster speeds. The only issue is, Google Fiber has not been released to the whole world yet. It will take some time to get all their fiber installed around the world. For now though, only Kansas City is fortunate enough to enjoy this fantastic new technology. Once they get all this running, the next thing I need is my car with an integrated computer all connected at 1000 mb/s to a satellite for an unlimited connection wherever I go. What's your take on getting Google Fiber into your town? Is it worth it to allow Google to know just about everything about you? Hopefully it comes soon because I plan on getting it when right away!
